Life at the Baldwin Animal Care Center in Los Angeles County,  is no cake walk to say and write the least. The shelter, which is grappling with over crowding, often has to make tough decisions to free up kennel space, to give other dogs an opportunity to get adopted. That means euthanasia and it is no easy task for anyone involved. For dogs who become shelter staff favorites, this doesn’t guarantee that they will survive. When it comes down to it, unfortunately, it is a numbers game, and so for kill shelters like Baldwin, they are almost left with no other choice.  For a dog named Shelby who was placed at the high kill shelter in late October, time is not on her side.

In just a short period of time, her charming personality, and love for everyone quickly made her a staff favorite. But with demand for kennel space, and no takers, Shelby has run out of luck and was placed on death row.  According to a source who wished to remain anonymous, In just a few days, if Shelby is not adopted she will be euthanized. Shelter volunteer and professional photographer John Hwang took a photo of Shelby the moment she learned she would be placed on death row. The images, which are heartbreaking, shows the sadness, loneliness and dejection written all over her face as she learns her fate.

John took to his Facebook page and said,

“After playing with her for some time, she could sense I had to go. This is always the hardest part, having to pull myself away. Seeing the sadness in her eyes, as I get up. She craves human affection so much, and she has so much love to give. This incredibly sweet girl is at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter, and is available for adoption on November 4th.”

A Pet Harbor Listing for Shelby reads,

“My name is Shelby and I’m an approximately 1 year old female Chihuahua.  I am not yet spayed.  I have been at the Baldwin Animal Care Center since late October. You can visit me at my temporary home at B342.”
