Precious Pup With The Saddest Past Is So Happy In Her New Forever Home

If shelter dogs could speak, they would tell us all about the rejection, neglect and hardships they had to face after being surrendered by heartless owners. They would tell us all about the chaos, noise and confusion of shelter life, and how lonely and dark living inside confined kennel space, where you await an uncertain future. However, few would live to tell the epic that was Sunshine’s former life.

At just the tender age of three-months-old, Sunshine was raised in a South Korea meat farm where she would eventually be someone’s dinner one day. That was until a miracle came in the form of an international rescue coordinated by the San Francisco SPCA, who would negotiate intensely to not only save her life, but 57 other kennel mates of hers all facing death. Thankfully for Sunshine, her story became one of triumph.

Married couple Katie Mickey and her husband Kyle Locke where in the market to adopt a shelter pet, even going as far as to rent a pet friendly home, because they were certain to adopt and soon.

Soon after they found their pet friendly home, the couple set out searching for a shelter pup they could adopt when they came across an all points bulletin from the Humane Society International, that stated they were placing dogs rescued from South Korean meat farms, in California, no kill shelters. The couple raced to get more information, and made the four hour journey to the San Francisco SPCA where they waited in line to get a chance at a new pup.

Mickey says,

“This story broke and all of a sudden, it felt like the universe had conspired and all of this had happened for a reason.”

She filled out the application, waited to be vetted that day, and left home with Sunshine.

As soon as Sunshine arrived to her new home, she lit up the place like no one ever could. Imagine how Sunshine must feel in her new life. She went from caged animal about to be slaughtered to her meat, from enjoying the life of a free puppy with doting parents.

Since moving in with Mickey and Locke, Sunshine has seen some things, and has dome some things.

And most importantly, lived the life she was supposed to live-the life of a happy dog.

While Sunshine might literally be considered a lucky pup, thousands of dogs languish in South Korea farms where they await an uncertain future. The Humane Society International has waged war on the dog meat industry in Asia, and so far it has paid off. They have freed thousands of dogs, and most importantly raised awareness to alert governments to the despicable trade.

The Humane Society International’s approach is not only to focus on the dogs they save, but on the farmers who practice the trade to source income. They negotiate with the farmers to release the dogs, and promise to train them in other traditional farming techniques like transforming the land they own to producer pepper, strawberry or blueberry farms. Most importantly, they teach owners that dogs are not to be treated as a food source but rather members of a domesticated family.

Mickey concludes,

“They want to show the people of South Korea that they’re just normal dogs. Because, obviously, it’s not sustainable to fly every single dog from a dog meat farm into the United States. Ideally, if all the dogs from closed-down dog meat farms could be adopted locally, that would be much better.”
