A hunter shot his brother to death — because he mistook him for a “small animal,” authorities said.
Atlanta residents Brian Pickle and his brother Scott were on a family hunting trip with their dad in a heavily wooded area in South Carolina on Saturday evening.
Shortly before 6 p.m., Scott — thinking his 30-year-old brother was a coyote or a deer — took aim and fired, killing him, cops said.
Union County Sheriff David Taylor said that Scott was quick to pull the trigger because nightfall was nearing.
Emergency responders found Brian in the woods with a gunshot wound to his head.
“We see these types of accidents all too frequently,” said Taylor, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The profile photo on Scott’s Facebook page is a photo of him and his brother.
“I’m so sorry Scott. Hope it brings some sort of comfort knowing how many people Brian impacted. I’m grieving for you and your family and am sure I’ll see you in the next few days,” Facebook user Adam Bradley posted in the comments section of the photo.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
Criminal charges were not immediately filed against Scott.
