Woman’s bizarre behavior ends with violent torture methods to kill her three dogs

Dehaven

MARTINSBURG — A Martinsburg woman is facing four felony charges after allegedly killing three dogs.

Sarah Dawn Dehaven, 35, of Poor House Road in Martinsburg, was arraigned Sunday in Berkeley County Magistrate Court on felony charges of three counts of animal abuse and one count of first-degree arson.

Police say they were called to Poor House Road on Sunday afternoon, where Dehaven allegedly had machetes and knives.

Once on the scene, officers discovered three slain German Shepherds, according to the criminal complaint.

According to court documents, one dog was hung with an electrical cord and the other two were strangled with a ratchet clamp.

One dog is alleged to have been found with a green New Testament Bible in its mouth.

Witnesses said Dehaven was allegedly acting “crazy” earlier and talking“religiously,” saying passages from the Bible that “did not make sense,”according to the charging documents.

Police investigated Dehaven’s domicile and discovered a baby doll hanging outside in a similar manner to the way the dogs were found, court documents say.

Investigators also found corn stalks which were allegedly used to start a fire that burned a part of the residence.

A witness stated Dehaven allegedly told a neighbor to “shut up her dogs or she would kill” them, charging documents say.

As they were arresting Dehaven, police officers noticed her hands were covered in black soot.

“It was a heinous crime for sure,” said Trooper Satterfield, a West Virginia State Police officer who assisted with the investigation. “It was as awful as you can imagine, if not worse.”
