Riviera woman arrested after cops find her 2 dogs barely alive

PALM BEACH COUNTY (CBS12) — A Riviera Beach woman faces animal cruelty charges after police found two dogs starved and barely alive. The Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Division have seen says animal abuse happens all the time but they need the public’s help to decrease the number of cases.

“It is unfortunately, something we see all the time,” said Captain Dave Walesky, Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control Division. “It’s something we see every day. We respond to complaints. We investigate, we talk to neighbors.”

A pit bull and chihuahua were found in March when Palm Beach County Animal Control officers responded to a call of a child being bitten by the pit bull at a Riviera Beach home. On Thursday, 33-year-old Kenya Smith was finally arrested for the crime and charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Captain Walesky says there is no excuse for this kind of abuse.

“There are animal shelters around this County,” said Capt. Walesky. “People have options. And if they have a problem, they need to explore their options before it gets too late.

The pit bull was euthanized for the attack. The child’s condition is unknown. As for the Chihuahua, he’s in better health and living with an adopted family. Meanwhile, Capt. Walesky urges you to keep an eye out for animal abuse.

“It’s very important that the public contact us when they see animals that they look like they need intervention, or need some help,” said Capt. Walesky.

If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, contact animal control immediately. You can remain anonymous.
