Need Help: Pregnant Mother Dogs Kept Alone in Basement Rescued Just in Time to Give Birth

A total of five dogs were living in a abandoned home all alone, with no one to take care of them. Two were living in the shed, and three inside of a dank, flooded basement. New York City based Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, had heard about the dogs, and knew that they had to step in and help.

Stacey Silverstein of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC said,

“They have no human contact and get fed when someone shows up, which is approximately three times per week.”

In spite of only caring for the dogs occasionally, remarkably, their owners did not want to give them up right away. Thankfully, rescuers were able to convince the dogs owners that Pocahontas, who was heavily pregnant by the time they arrived, to go with them just in time before she gave birth to 12 puppies. Unfortunately, only eight of the twelve puppies survived.

Pocahontas has been an incredible mother to her 8 surviving babies, and as the days go on, they are getting stronger and stronger. Now that Pocahontas was well, rescuers shifted their attention to saving the four other dogs, who were still at the abandoned property.

The next dog rescuers turned their attention to was Queen, who just so happened to be Pocahontas’ mother. Silverstein continues,

“We were able to remove Queen shortly thereafter and she went directly to our vet in Brooklyn where it was discovered that she was pregnant as well.”

Queen, who was also pregnant, was eventually rescued and brought to the safety of a foster home where she gave birth to 13 total puppies, 12 of who survived.

To be frank, it is safe to say that Pocahontas learned from the best because Queen is just like her in raising her newborne pups. She is sweet, gentle and very caring.

Silverstein concludes,

“Both dogs are amazing, loving, sweet, affectionate and gentle. We have been unsuccessful to rescue the others but we are still trying.”

Thanks to the kindness and compassion of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, Queen and Pocahontas will never have to go back to living in the confines of a dark, wet flooded basement where they were essentially waiting to die. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
