A Virginia Beach man who was charged with felony animal cruelty and abuse for strangling and then stabbing his dog was convicted on all counts by a jury of his peers. After the verdict, a judge subsequently sentenced Vernon Boyd Eaton, Jr. to 5 years in state prison. The tough-talking judge told Eaton he was “mortified” by what he had done, and also ordered as a condition of his sentence that he never own another companion animal for life.

On August 1, 2015, an anonymous tip came into Virginia Beach Animal Control (VBAC), about a dog who had been in severe distress, laying in the back of a pickup truck barely clinging to life. The VBAC, along with police followed up on the lead, and that’s when they encountered the terrier mix with zip ties around his neck. Upon closer examination of the pup, he was also found to be suffering from stab wounds in the abdomen.

Police eventually caught up with Eaton, who still had blood on his hands, to question him about what happened to his dog. Eaton readily confessed to the crime and was subsequently arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty and abuse.

The dog whose name was Tua Tua, was rushed to an emergency medical clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival after rescuers tried desperately to resuscitate him.  Eaton sat stoically as the verdict was read and did not show any emotion nor remorse as he was led away in handcuffs after he was sentenced.
