Bullies throw deaf student’s homework and supplies into the toilet, forcing him to transfer schools

This is a saddening story about a deaf student who had his belongings dumped into a toilet at Burke High School due to his disability. The student identified as Alex Hernandez says two male students took his backpack during lunch and threw his tablet, school supplies, debit card and homework into the toilet.

Along with his belongings, they also threw the battery for his cochlear implant which meant the student couldn’t use his hearing aid in his classroom.

The event was so traumatizing for Hernandez that he has already made plans to transfer schools. A truly heartbreaking story about teenagers doing this to one another. The topic was so hard for Alex to talk about on television that the young teen even broke out in tears.

Since these events happened, his close friends and numerous strangers have stepped up to offer their support. They even recommended Hernandez transfer schools, which he plans on doing.

“I wanted to thank all of my friends and those who wrote me for supporting me. I am very happy. It made me feel like I am not alone,” says Hernandez. The teen says many of the people who wrote to him were also deaf– an amazing community showing that they care.

“They said they felt sorry for me and had me in their prayers. They said [they] were here supporting me and they know how it feels like to be deaf. So I’m very happy,” says Alex.

Following this event, the mother plans to immediately talk to administrators about pulling her child from Burke High and submitting papers to transfer him to Ralston High School.

Hernandez says he has friends at Ralston High who also have hearing problems. The teen’s friend describe the high school as supportive of deaf students– an area where he won’t be bullied. A brilliant idea, Hernandez would be able to be with his friends and have a more accepting environment.

Since the case has been reported by the mother, Burke High administration are doing everything in their power to discipline the juveniles. Since the investigation, the two students have already been identified– one has already been suspended while the other is still being investigated.

The mother says, “It’s not fair that the bullies think they can continue with this behavior… they need to be reminded that there are consequences to stealing and bullying.”

The mother also adds that she hopes Alex’s case will bring more awareness to bulling and our children. She says that parents should really communicate with their kids and make sure they’re in a safe environment.

“Today was my kid – tomorrow will be somebody else’s,” said Alex’s mother.
